This is a superb area for walking. Buzzards fly above the red sandstone 'cliffs' of the Darren where the peregrine falcon also nests, and the raven's croak can be heard on the wilder parts of the mountain. Pony trekking explores the old packhorse routes, abandoned with the advent of the motor car.

Outside the valley a day could be spent fishing or canoeing on the River Wye, boating on the Brecon Canal or going down a Welsh coal mine. You may tour the many castles and churches of the area - Cardiff has an interesting 'open air' museum, and Hereford a beautiful cathedral and chained library. A ride over the Gospel Pass will bring you to the world renowned second hand bookshops of Hay-on-Wye and to Clyro where the Reverend Francis Kilvert lived. Country markets and sales are held at Abergavenny, Hay, Hereford and Monmouth.

Local inns offer good homemade food; some specialise in gourmet and vegetarian fare.
